Roos Hoogeboom most combative rider in grueling third stage 2019 Emakumeen Bira | Biehler Pro Cycling

On the third day of the 2019 Emakumeen Bira Roos Hoogeboom was awarded the prize for the most combative rider. Meanwhile, Teuntje Beekhuis was able to keep her 18th place in the general classification.

The 2019 Emakumeen Bira started with summer temperatures, but that was not the case on the third day of the race. Epic conditions made for an epic day of bike racing though, with Roos Hoogeboom being one of the riders in the long break.

Hoogeboom worked hard to stay ahead and she even won an intermediate sprint while holding a maximum advantage of almost a minute on the pack. The 36-year old was rewarded for her efforts with receiving the prize for the most aggressive rider on the podium.

More than this prize did the race not have in store for Hoogeboom, but she sure made a name for herself. “Our goal for this week was to actively show that we are here to race. Today was another example of that”, says director sportive Stefan van Klink after the race.

Van Klink, who is one of the youngest DS’s around in cycling, saw that Teuntje Beekhuis once again was strong when the road went uphill. She finished in 21st place, consolidating her 18th spot in the general classification. “Teuntje once again showed that she is a force to be reckoned with, despite the fact that this is only her first full season in a UCI team. In the first 70 kilometres, it was quite easy to keep up with the bunch, but in the final, it was just pure carnage. The peloton shattered quickly and I am very impressed that Teuntje once again was up there with the best in the world.”

“I also need to give a huge compliment to the other girls. Henrietta Colborne, Quinty Ton and Marissa Baks did a terrific job as well. They might not be making headlines, but they are pushing their personal boundaries.”

That is something they will need to do in the final stage because that might be the biggest challenge yet. In 156 kilometres there are five categorised climbs to be negotiated. “Yes, tomorrow will be one hell of a day”, Van Klink says. “It will be all about survival and finishing the race. Of course, we are all hoping that Teuntje has one more epic day in her legs. Will that happen? Only time will tell”, Van Klink concludes. “But whether it will happen or not, I believe we can already be proud of our Spanish adventure.”
