Preview: Trofee Maarten Wynants 2019 | SWABO Elite

SWABO’s elite riders who participated in the Tour of Uppsala enjoy a few days of well-deserved easy riding. A squad full of fresh riders is going to the Trofee Maarten Wynants.

Yonna van Dam

One of the riders representing the Dutch development team is Yonna van Dam. With the Belgian 1.1 race, she is facing a big challenge, but the young rider from Voorhout looks forward to it. Like all other competitors, she will have to negotiate a twelve-kilometre course ten times, making it a 120-kilometre race.

Van Dam is one of the newcomers to the SWABO Women Development Team. As a long-time member of RTV De Bollenstreek, the step to SWABO is a logical one, but a few years ago that wasn’t so likely. “When I hit puberty I felt the training was too much for me. I quit cycling for two years”, she says. “But I still went to my father’s races a lot and after these years I really felt motivated to start riding again.” Her move to SWABO underlines her refound motivation.

So far the 20-year old sprinter is enjoying her time in the elite team. “I really enjoy being part of this great group of riders and I really start to feel the effect of training with a proper schedule. During the criteriums, I’m able to ride more and more in the front of the peloton. As far as UCI races are concerned I only did the Omloop van Borsele this year, so there’s still a lot to learn in these types of races. But I look forward to the challenge that lies ahead.”

“Personally, finishing the race would already be huge for me. Besides that, I hope I can help out my teammates as good as I can. To see the girls in Sweden do so well is really motivating me as well. I hope we can build on the great momentum.” Van Dam will be joined by Tessa Dijksman, Lieke Van der Draaij, Tessa Neefjes and Melissa Wijfje, the world-class speed skater who once again will put on her beloved SWABO suit a few times this summer.

On May 12, the Trofee Maarten Wynants will start at 11.00 CET. The finish is expected around 14.00 CET. The race will not be televised.
