The second stage of the 2019 Tour of Uppsala is a stage members of the SWABO Women Development Team won’t forget quickly thanks to the brilliant third place finish of Hanneke de Goeje.
“From the beginning the pace was very high”, De Goeje recalls her race. “The peloton split up in multiple groups because of the wind. The long gravel sector, which was a new experience for me, also made for some differences.”
In the end though, everything came back together and the stage was decided in a bunch sprint. “The final kilometres were very hectic”, De Goeje says. “When we went underneath the flamme rouge I was still quite far back, so the best option for me was to launch the sprint early.”
“I should say that all of the girls did a great job today, but I especially need to thank Phaedra for her lead-out and I am absolutely thrilled to finish off the work with a third place. It certainly does not happen often that a club team gets on the podium in a UCI race, so we can be very proud of ourselves.”
“For me this result confirms that I am on the right track”, De Goeje concludes. “That is something I already knew, but due to a lot of bad luck I was not able to translate my good feeling into results. Now that I have I am absolutely delighted. Of course, I hope we can finish the race off well tomorrow, but for me personally, this race already is a great success.”
After two stages Phaedra Krol (who ended up seventh in the second stage) is SWABO’s highest-placed rider in the general classification. The 19-year old track and road prodigy currently sits in 13th place overall.
The third and final stage of the 2019 Tour of Uppsala is a criterium on a 14,5-kilometre undulating course. The race will be streamed live here at 16.30 CET.
